a word as Logan patched him up. Luke and I
took turns asking him questions about what had happened to him, whoâd roughed him up, but every inquiry was met with the same stony silence. I dropped into a chair and put my head in my hands, exhaustion taking hold.
âYou should go home,â Logan said. âBoth of you.â
âWhat about him?â Luke chucked a thumb at Big Joey. âWhatâs to stop him from killing you in your sleep?â
The Dark Prince shrugged. âSo I donât sleep.â
Luke put his hands on his hips and glared at his brother. âFor how long though. You canât stay awake indefinitely.â
âIf youâve got a better plan, Iâd love to hear it.â
I dragged Luke into the breezeway while Logan was finishing up.
âThis is getting us nowhere.â
My husband ran a hand through his hair. âItâs not too late to call Vasquez. Maybe do it through a third party, like Marcy, in case anyone is monitoring your phone calls.â
âI donât want to drag Marcy into this if we have any other choice.â
An idea had rooted itself in my head, like an itch that wouldnât go away. âLet me try and get through to him.â
âIsnât that what weâve been doing?â
Putting a hand on Lukeâs arm, I stared into his eyes. âI mean on my own. I think I can get him to talk to me.â
Luke scowled. âHe could attack you.â
Deep in my gut, I still believed Big Joey wasnât a violent guy.
Maybe it was idiotic to base my measure of a manâs character on his delight over baby sea turtles, but the image stayed in my head.
There was someone out there who was a bigger threat than him. I felt the certainty of my conviction all the way down to my bones. A soulless monster who would beat Mrs. Pomeroy to death, who had abducted my mother. Iâd come face to face with a killer before, I knew for sure that evil existed and it wasnât present in Big Joey. I glanced around to make sure none of Loganâs neighbors would overhear, then lowered my voice. âTie him to the chair. Leave me with your Taser.â
Luke opened his mouth to refuse outright but I kept on going, needing to get it all out. âIf this doesnât work weâll call Vasquez in. But I have to at least try.â
He looked at me for a long moment, then closed his eyes. âFine, but either Logan or I will stay in the apartment with you in case you need back up. Whichever of us you want.â
I thought about what heâd ask me earlier if I regretted not being with Logan. âIt wasnât a choice. What you asked me earlier. Being with Logan was never really an option for me.â
He frowned. âNowâs not the timeââ
Wrapping my hands around the back of his neck, I pulled him down until his lips met mine and kissed the ever-loving shit out of him.
He stood still, utterly stunned for a moment, obviously shocked.
Then his arms went around me, and he pulled my body flush against his while his mouth devoured mine.
